Team 9: Hospital Discharge

Description

Tyler, 9 years old, went for surgery for a left femoral shaft fracture after falling off the play structure at school. After his surgery, he participated in a 4-week extensive physiotherapy program. After 4 weeks, Tyler is gaining his strength back with the help of mobility devices, for example walking up the stairs. Tyler has already stayed an additional week due to insufficient home care availability. The Social Worker and Child and Youth Care worker believe that Tyler should continue to stay in the hospital until he is fully recovered. Due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the hospital and Tyler getting better, the nurse believes it is time for Tyler to get discharged. The different views on care cause conflict between the nurse, social worker and child and youth care worker. The Public Health official believes that Tyler should be discharged due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Tyler’s mom is okay to work from home or take time off from work if needed to help Tyler gets better. Although, she would prefer him to stay in the hospital until he is fully recovered. The Public Health Official is open to writing a letter to her workplace to allow for a leave of absence to take care of her son.
