A Rural Community Under Pressure
Description
Peel Public Health region has passed a water conservation by law stating that all rural developments that were built 30 years ago must replace their water pipes in Peel region. This affects a community centre that is being forced to shut down because it cannot afford to replace water pipes on its own expense. The community centre has a local clinic, along with a daycare, where the early childhood educators and social workers provide daily services to those in the community. The nurses, social workers and early childhood educators refuse to close the community centre as this will affect the community in various ways. They will not have access to any other local clinic or day care centre in the community because this is the only one accessible in the community. They will have to travel to the nearest town to receive health care services, which will be a barrier because the community comprises mainly of low income families. Unfortunately, Peel Public Health Region are forcing the shutdown of the community centre unless the management of the community centre replaces water pipes, regardless of the severity of the situation.
