Beyond the Algorithm

Description

Five close university friends get together at Yusuf’s (IT student) house for a fun celebratory dinner party. Yusuf then shows off a new AI tool he is helping develop for the IT company he works for, where the AI tool would automate complex coding with minimal error, allowing it to almost perfectly make a system for machines and services, however it is still in the mid-stage of development. Farhaan (Business & Marketing student) views the AI tool as being extremely useful when it is complete to tackle data/analytical tasks which would save time and make his job easier, Mary (Project Management - Insurance student) agree that AI is a useful tool, but further adds on that AI is the best way for businesses to maximize efficiency, cut costs, and make jobs easier. However, the mood shifts when Daniel (Nursing student) and Krystyna (Social Work student) push back. Daniel mentions the overwhelming amount of human costs and job cuts/layoffs that would occur if a tool like this was to finish being developed and be used by businesses. Krystyna also shares her concern of how AI tools are slowly creeping their way into the healthcare industry, and if AI tools take over, her job would be at risk, as well as the patients overall well being from a psychological perspective as they would lose that human interaction/connection when they are in a vulnerable state. As all five friends share their perspectives, everyone’s voices get louder, harsher words are being used, everyone is cutting each other off when someone is speaking, personal comments are being made, etc. This causes the conversation to escalate to an emotional conflict about human value and personal gain, causing the party to slowly be ruined.
