Team 10: The Discharge Debate
Description
The patient is a 12 year old female diagnosed with an eating disorder who has been hospitalized for the past three months. The parents of patient approach the interdisciplinary team to see whether their child is ready for discharge. During the team’s weekly meeting, the patient's health/recovery/mental well-being are discussed and the team finds themselves split on a vote as to whether the patient is ready to go home. The majority of the group is in favour of the patient staying in the hospital, however some members disagree. The group experiences conflict as to whether there is a sufficient amount of community/social support in place for the patient’s discharge as well as whether the patient will be properly supported in a traditional school setting. The disciplines must work through this interdisciplinary conflict in order to find a solution while keeping the patient’s best interest in mind.
