Interdisciplinary Approach for Complex Clients
Description
In our conflict scenario, four workers from different disciplines collaborate while working with a client who has a history of opiate addiction, mental health issues, and a criminal past. Our interdisciplinary team includes a social worker, a nurse, a criminologist, and a sociologist. Our sociologist will act as the stories narrator. Our client, Jason Smith, is a 30 year old Indigenous man who has been admitted to the hospital as a result of an overdose. He has an upcoming court appearance for assault charges against him. Seeing that he is Indigenous, his case will be submitted to Gladue Court, which is a court designed specifically for Indigenous offenders. In Gladue Court, a clients representatives can often make pre-sentencing recommendations to the judge that might suit the needs of the client. This can often include alternatives to traditional incarceration, such as conditional sentences, intermediate sanctions, and community-based correctional programs. Our team aims to find appropriate sentencing recommendations to submit to the judge ahead of Jason's court date.
