The Patient Dilemma: Conflict Among Professionals
Description
The scenario starts off with the nurse conducting an assessment during the client’s home visit for a 35 year-old patient who is a war veteran from Germany newly residing in Toronto. The nurse was assigned to this client after a family member, who moved here with the client for work, recognized that this client has shown symptoms of PTSD and is unable to live independently, and thus preventing him from getting a job. The client is obstructed from living a functional and healthy life due to the fact that he has an amputated leg and does not speak English. After conducting the assessment, the nurse has recognized that as the client’s advocate, it is his job to build community connections with the client and other professionals including a social worker, an occupational health and safety worker, and even an english tutor/translator. In doing so, this will hopefully empower the client in developing his personal skills, and also to aid in decreasing the effects of his physical and social limitations for his well being.
The nurse contacts each professional to do an assessment on their client. Each scene allows the specific professional to highlight their strengths by working with the client and showing him how their profession can help better his situation. After doing so, each professional comes together to discuss the plan of care for the client which results in a heated conflict arising from the english tutor, the occupational health and safety worker and the nurse. Each professional believes that their work is of more importance and is the top priority for the client. The social workers both act as the mediators and help the professionals to realize that each discipline has an integral role in bettering the client’s well-being. However, in order to do this, each individual must collaborate with one another moving forward with the client. This will counteract the sour and negative attitudes of the other professions, and will help all individuals recognize that it is a team effort and no matter which professional works with the client first, the goal is a client-centred approach. Everyone is in agreement and each profession recognizes how important the work of the other professions is. This leads to the English tutor/translator concluding with the other professionals that the client is excited and happy to be working with the team to help him get on the right track to being a competent and independent individual.
