Team 6, CINT905-DH0 Spring Intensive

Description

Team 6, CINT905-DH0 Spring Intensive The scenario starts with Dr. James, R/N John, Joanne, and Gemma sitting in the examination room. Gemma is admitted into the hospital for her bulimia diagnosis by the request of her mother Joanne, in hopes to receive specialized medical assistance. As a result, Dr. James and R/N John start asking Joanne questions regarding Gemma's nutritional diet, to see how Joanne has been helping Gemma recover from her severe eating disorder prior to admitting her to the hospital. Upon further assessment, Dr. James and R/N John find out that Joanne been unable to care for Gemma, due to becoming depressed following her recent finalized divorced with Gemma's father. Moreover, Joanne has been unable to find employment due to her lack of a high school diploma, which adds additional stress onto Joanne's psyche. However, Joanne is very close with Gemma and requests that despite disclosing her troubling situation, she hopes that she'll be allowed to stay by Gemma's side during her recovery process, a feeling that is greatly reciprocated by Gemma. Dr. James and R/N John tell the duo that they want to consult their interdisciplinary team as to decide if that is a good idea. Joanne and Gemma understand, but not without pleading one last time toward the physicians before they walk out of the door. Dr. James and R/N John then find themselves outside of the examination room, sharing their thoughts on what should happen before they enter the meeting room and stand before their interdisciplinary team. Dr. James believes that Joanne should be separated from Gemma due to being unfit to care for her. However, R/N John disagrees, explaining how the separation will only worsen the situation since it contributes to the stigmatization of mentally ill mothers and will cause Gemma to have separation anxiety. Due to the variation of opinion, Dr. James then brings the conversation into the meeting room. Once Dr. John and R/N John discloses the information to Pamela and Amal, the decision to not separate Joanne and Gemma was favoured the most. Pamela looks toward systematic elements (the inability for Joanne to find adequate employment) that caused Joanne to be unfit to care for Gemma, whereas Amal looked more on the personal side of things; reflecting upon how Joanne's divorce, isolation from family and friends, and lack of coping had caused her depression to worsen. What they also take into consideration is Joanne's and Gemma's feelings toward their separation, understanding that they are each other's support systems. The interdisciplinary team then went on to come to a consensus and discuss solutions to care for both Joanne and Gemma's situations. Immediately after, Joanne and Gemma are called back into the examination room to face Dr. James and R/N John. They greet each other civilly, and the two physicians let the duo know that they will not be separating them, but rather letting them stay together through both Gemma's recovery process and for Joanne's journey to mental wellness. Pamela then makes herself known to the room, letting Joanne know that she’ll be the main professional working with and for them. The scenario ends when teary-eyed Joanne and happy Gemma agree with Pamela and provide their details to her, later wishing each other well for their future.
