The Case of the White Oaks Middle School Bullies
Over the last five years, White Oaks Middle School encountered a high number of bullying incidents and was a concern to parents and staff. Teachers, nurses, and Child and Youth Counsellors (CYCs) saw the importance to take action in order to eradicate this ongoing issue. A survey confirmed White Oaks Middle School was one of the schools with the highest concern of the school board. As a result of these factors, it was deemed to be one of four schools to receive funding for an anti-bullying pilot project. An anti-bullying program was put together by a sociologist, which included additional educational materials against bullying, special activities directed at spreading the awareness of bullying, and staff to support these new additions to the school. The funding organization agreed to re-evaluate the program in a year to evaluate its effectiveness; if it proves to be effective, the organization will continue to fund the program. Statistics over a period of a year have been collected and compiled by the onsite and offsite nurse and CYCs for a pre-test and post-test comparison to measure and present at the first annual meeting.
Almost a year has passed and a round table meeting has been called to address the pilot project’s progress with the following professionals: sociologist, project manager (PM), White Oaks Middle School onsite CYC and nurse, offsite Toronto District School Board (TDSB) CYC, and community nurse. As the onsite nurse and CYC go over the data prior to the meeting, it is noted the numbers of bullying incidents decreased in the beginning, but started to rise again near the end of the school year. Currently, the numbers are even higher than the previous year, although the average of the overall year has shown some decrease. The incidents appeared to have not changed dramatically in medical needs at the beginning of the year, but increased significantly near the end. Further, a recent serious incident where a male student physically attacked and harmed another male student resulted in the need for medical attention and heightened the significance of the upcoming meeting. Each professional will present their agenda to the team, followed by discussion to determine the next steps. The needs and wants presented by the onsite professionals and community-based professionals are in conflict. The sociologist and PM are third parties that may be in conflict with the other present parties or taking up a side.
