Team 7: Understanding and Valuing Different Roles
Description
A dietitian, social worker, occupational health and safety (OHS) professional, and nurse, work at a busy hospital. The social worker and dietitian speak to a low-income patient about a plan to gain access to healthy food once discharged. Unbeknownst to the dietitian and social worker, the nurse communicates contradicting information to the patient, though it appears that this is not the first time! The dietitian is called in for an investigation from the numerous patient complaints, where she and the social worker then attempt to speak to the nurse to no avail. Feeling neglected in her position, the frustrated dietitian aggressively confronts the nurse, where a fiery conflict ensues.
Each profession will demonstrate a different conflict style within this scenario such as avoiding, collaborating, competing and accommodating. Scenario touches upon multiple areas of study such as conflict resolution, conflict behaviour motivation and self-reflection. The conflict is transformed by the movement of the third-party intervention; the occupational health and safety professional who encourages communication between parties.
