Description

A social worker accompanies her autistic youth client to a children's hospital to receive a vaccination. While there, the social worker informs the nurse that she will stay by the youth's side to comfort him.The nurse responds condescendingly and deems the social worker unknowledgeable due to her cultural background. The social worker refrains from replying in order to avoid conflict, and allows the nurse to proceed. The nurse attempts to administer the injection. The youth, fearful of the situation, attempts to defend himself from the nurse. As a result, the nurse is hit by the youth. The nurse, realizing her mistake, turns to the social worker for assistance. A Child and Youth care worker and a second nurse was then brought in to deescalate the situation. The youth was then prepared for the injection by the social worker, and the injection was administered by the second nurse without incident.
