Vijay the Vandal
Description
Red- Group 5 - Zubick
-A male youth is caught vandalizing the outside wall of his school. A police officer (Belva) drives by, and sees him. When the youth sees the officer drive by, he tries to jump over a fence, and gets hurt upon landing. The officer detains him and brings him to the hospital for assessment. Upon arrival, the nurse (Muzinga [Lucie]), assesses his physical health, and calls the youth's family.
The youth's parents are immigrants from Sri Lanka, so the nurse calls a Tamil interpreter (Shiany) to interpret. The nurse calls a Child and youth care worker (Ashley) to the hospital, who does further child/family assessment. Further, the police officer calls the youth's teacher from previous years (Emily), because she is aware of the youth's propensity to engage in misconduct.
At the hospital then, we have a police officer, a nurse, a CYC worker, a teacher (ECE), and an interpreter. Conflict arises when each of these parties advocates for a different course of action for the youth. The police officer advocates for the child's arrest since he is not a stranger to misconduct. The nurse advocates for further psychological evaluation to test if the child has a disorder such as ADD. The ECE advocates for a family intervention to resolve any conflict that is present at home. The CYC advocates for special family programming in order for the youth and his family to strengthen their relationships. The Tamil interpreter lets everyone know that the parents simply want to bring the youth home, and that they want to take care of the discipline on their own. Due to the parents' pleas, the interpreter begins to take this position and advocate for the youth's release so the parents can deal with him.
In the end, all parties agree on a common resolution after talking with the youth and determining that he does not feel close with his family. Thus, it is decided that it will be in the youth's best interest to let him and his family engage in family programming in order to bolster relationships, and prevent this from happening again.
