Group 8: The Outbreak

Description

A measles outbreak occurs at Chesterville Elementary School. Kylie (early childhood educator) and Laura (school social worker) are against vaccines and become angered when the public health inspector (PHI), Brittany, decides to issue mandatory suspension orders for non-immune students and a vaccination day at school. Conflict begins as the lack of communication in the school, leaves the workers feeling forced to support these activities, as decided by the PHI. A team meeting is called by Principal Smith for the faculty and the PHI, to discuss their opinions. However, Brittany misinterprets her invitation as a teaching opportunity, leading to violated expectations and an escalating conflict in the meeting. Confrontation between all five occur, beginning from a hostile place, working toward conflict management. Basmeen (School Nurse) tries to encourage health education as a way to promote the importance of getting vaccinated. However, differences in values, ideas and beliefs further contribute to the conflict, before the roots of these individual thoughts are explored. Following the meeting, Kylie and Laura remain unconvinced to change their beliefs, insinuating conflict on vaccination day. By attending an educational seminar - communication becomes open, knowledge is gained and a resolution is reached. Ending off with Laura and Kylie's change in viewpoints and their support for vaccination day. Disclaimer: Please watch at speed x3
