An Exclusive Community Event
Description
A group of students are working at the same field placement at a run-down community centre on behalf of their university/college. Conflict arises when their supervisor falls ill and is unable to make it to work for a month. Due to the unexpected news, the students are now responsible for carrying out the task of organizing a community barbeque in the supervisor’s absence, and they need to engage the community in this event. The purpose of this event is to engage key stakeholders within the community in order to access more funding and raise awareness of the community centre. Plans to remodel and rephrase the centre are to be put into place when the students’ supervisor returns, and he wants a report on what each student thinks the new and improved community centre should function as. However, this task comes with conflicting opinions of how it would best be carried out due to the varying professions and areas of study of the students.
The students disagree on planning details and attendees for the event. They all want to exclusively engage their own community stakeholders based on who they think should fund and inhabit the new community centre. Conflict arises when the students cannot come to a consensus on who to include and who to exclude in the community barbeque guest list, as each student foresees a different future for the new community centre.
