A hospital interdisciplinary team conflict

Description

On May 15th, 2026, an unconscious homeless patient arrived at the emergency department. The condition of the patient seemed alerting and may need urgent medical attention. When the hospital’s nurses tried to assess the patient, the hospital’s operation manager (Business manager) asked the nurses if the patient information was identified or not. However, the patient was brought to the hospital with no healthcare or other means of identification. A social worker team was called to assess and retrieve any information. As the patient’s condition seemed serious, the nurses claimed providing the patient immediate treatment, although lack of the patient's medical history, including allergies or medications, may interfere with their care and worsen the condition. Then, social workers raised concerns about knowing the patient’s identifications or any known family members for the patient's informed consent, especially if the treatment may result in a potential negative consequence. With a potential outcome that might be negative, the operation manager raised his/her concern about liability issue related to treating a patient without any identification, as well as unknown insurance coverage. While the interdisciplinary team were debating about each other’s concerns, the patient might have missed a golden time for treatment. Upon agreeing with a common goal of the interdisciplinary team is the well-being of the patient, the team tried to de-escalate the debate and find a resolution.
