Chaos Turns to Calm - DLO

Description

Play on 3x speed “Little Dino’s Daycare” is a licensed home daycare managed by an early childhood educator - Ms. Correia. On a typical day, Ms. Correia will care for 5 children at a time all between the ages of 4-7. One Friday afternoon, 5-year-old Charlie managed to climb up a small play structure in the play room and attempted to go down the slide which measured a height of six feet. Just as Charlie was sitting down, he reached for the rail, but fell off the side of the slide and hit his head. Ms. Correia ran over to see what happened, Charlie appeared very upset and was screaming in pain. Ms. Correia called 911 immediately. She also contacted Charlie’s parents who rushed to the hospital. Charlie sustained a mild concussion and after speaking with the child, the hospital staff seem to be confused as to how this could have happened. Tensions are high as a meeting is held between Charlie’s parents, Ms. Correia, and the hospital staff to determine what occurred and if this accident could have been avoided. The hospital has become extremely busy recently due to the flu season. As a result, the nurses on the floor have been swamped with work and are working really hard to discharge patients who can recover at home to free up some beds. Since the nurses are trying to discharge the boy ASAP they have not been able to communicate with the social workers, occupational health and safety worker, as well as the ECE who was looking after him during the incident. Due to the lack of communication between the team it has created confusion and frustration for the boy and his family. As the conflict continues to escalate can this team of professionals come together, listen and respect one another so that they can successfully support this child and his family?
