Conflict on Maternity Floor
Description
An experienced midwife of 25 years, physician, social worker, and a less experienced registered nurse of 2 years experience conflict when working a day shift on the hospital’s maternity floor. Scene begins with a perinatal social worker bringing in a 16 year old pregnant POC teenager that is in labour and evidently in pain. Perinatal social worker explains her situation (she's 16, first pregnancy, low income, father is not in the picture). 16 year old pregnant teen complains of experiencing an immense amount of pain (rates pain 9/10). Registered nurse begins to help the patient and calls the physician for further assistance. As the physician does an assessment on the patient, the registered nurse becomes passive aggressive and begins to lash out at the pregnant teen. Social worker and registered nurse engage in a heated argument. Midwife notices the argument and begins to de-escalate it. The scenario ends with apologies and reflection by the registered nurse.
