A Focus Group with Stroke Survivors and Caregivers

Description

Our movie depicts an initial focus group completed with stroke survivors and their caregivers at a local recreational centre. Facilitated by Helga, a social worker and the program lead for a new health promotion and awareness program for seniors, this focus group explores the strengths, abilities, values, preferences, worries, needs, and challenges of stroke survivors and their caregivers. Concepts we explore include: older adults’ experiences of poverty; social isolation and support; the intersection of gaining with immigration and settlement; family and community caregiving; and caregiver burden. By focusing on the experiences of stroke survivors and their caregivers, we hope to inspire critical reflection on Aging in Place as a policy ideal. We invite the audience to reflect on broader questions, including: How is Aging in Place working? What are the limitations of Aging in Place? Where do we go from here?
