The Pregnant Inmate
Description
A woman with schizophrenia in her early 30’s named Madeline was found guilty of committing murder. She was sentenced to prison for the count of murder. However, she is also pregnant. Thus, she needs a lot of assistance with both mental and physical examinations due to her history of schizophrenia and the ongoing pregnancy. Bringing her into a violent prison where people could harm her is not a good idea, as it is dangerous for the baby. The nurse wants to keep her in a private area in the prison in order to provide additional support and protect the two of them. However, the officer believes that the inmate should be in the same prison as everyone else who has committed the crime, as that is what’s fair. However, the nurse believes that it is safer for her and the baby to be in a safe environment. The clinical social worker in the protective custody prison has agreed to provide daily counselling sessions. The inmate has a history of alcoholism as well. The clinical social worker and nurse disagree with the officer, and the officer still believes that this inmate should be with everyone else. The conflict arises because the team cannot decide the best place to keep her in the prison due to differing beliefs and concerns.
