Description
Our conflict scenario takes place in a daycare at the beginning of the school year. It centers on a 5-year-old child named Skye Longboat who is Mohawk/Mi’kmaq and registered with Six Nations Ohsweken Community. Skye has uncontrolled Type 1 Diabetes and requires insulin administration. The conflict is that Skye’s needs are not being managed in a culturally competent way by the daycare. The parents are concerned about their child’s care and ask the organization to address their concerns and work with an Indigenous social worker. Several things need to be improved and addressed like diet and methods to resolve behavioural issues since these aspects are approached differently in the family’s culture. An interdisciplinary team meeting is scheduled, including employees from the daycare, social workers, and nurses. This meeting is where the conflict scenario takes place.
